Literature Text

      This isn't the regular diary you would find hidden under your sister's pillow. No. This is the diary of a demon who became an angel, an angel who lost his wings, and a wingless angel who became a demon…me…or in Auriano, the language of the lifeless, ip.

     I'm sure now you must be asking with skeptic eyes what I ever did to become an angel, lose my wings and turn into a demon. You must believe I'm the evil one in the story, and though I won't deny my devilish nature, I must pop your bubble right now. I hope that by the time you finish reading this your mind has changed enough to understand that you've been wrong all along about angels and demons. The pure creatures with bright white wings and the hideous species made to bring suffering don't exactly fit the description of an angel and a demon. True, angels are sided to protect the good and destroy the bad; true, demons are cold-hearted creatures that bring nothing but pain.  However, don't be fooled. That's not all.

     You could better describe angels as people overly obsessed with things being nice and paradisiacal and with enough power to change those that are not—as cool at that may sound—some are unable to see the beauty in this anti-utopian world. Angels are viewed as immaculate creatures, and they are truly the closest thing to perfection you'll ever find, but in the society we live…that's just for the worse. Let's just say for now that their closeness to purity is both a curse and blessing to living things.

     Angels, and demons for that matter, aren't actually alive. We are conglomerated masses of energy to which nature itself has given a shape. I am well aware that your beliefs tell you that the devil created demons and God created angels, well, that I don't know. I'm not here either to confirm or to deny their existence. Neither angels nor demons possess that kind of information. Angels and demons are born in similar ways, as to why nature shapes this energy either way is quite unknown. I guess there lies the answer to God's/ the devil's existence, but as I said, nobody knows.

     Everything in the universe has energy, and energy can't be created or destroyed, that's the Law. When an object, a person, an animal, a plant, or rather anything can no longer hold the energy within it, he, or she releases it. This energy has a 99.9% to a 0.1% of either returning to Earth and fusing with something else, or becoming the base energy for an angel or demon.

     Now, demons, demons, demons, what could you say: the bringers of suffering, the ones made out of pure hate, the ones that could kill you with a glance, and my favorite, the ones that should be destroyed. You all hate demons. You think they (or should I say we) should not exist.

     Please don't misunderstand me though. I'm not trying to say that angels are bad and demons are good. The thing is that it really isn't that simple. It's much more complicated. To fully explain you the nature of demons we must go a little deeper. Let's start by dividing our demons into two categories: life-born and pure-born.

     Even though life-born and pure-born demons arise through the same process there is one thing that distinguishes them apart. Sometimes when energy is mutilated in its physical form it remains in the atmosphere. Unable to reattach to another being, it gains shape of its own: a true gift from nature. This is why most demons are excellent shape shifters. That is because, although we possess shape, we lack form. Form is what limits beings to their physical shapes, thus, by lacking form our shapes are less defined. In other words, we have no physical structure, but do have a shape that can be perceived as physical to all living beings. What we really change is the way you perceive our shape. The most powerful can distort their image to anything they want. The less powerful, like me, are more restricted. I, for example, can only transform into an orchid and a pretty four-year old boy with green eyes, blond hair,  and a French phenotype. Life-borns originate from living things while pure-borns originate from inanimated things and are thus weaker than life-borns. All of us, however, deep inside, are still the same conglomerate masses of unstable energy.

     Demons and angels can't die like a living being does; after all we don't really have a life. We do, however, have what we call mid-deaths and the Time. During mid-deaths the shape we have gained is lost; thus, we go back to being floating masses of energy; until sometime later we regain a shape. This new shape has only but glimpses of its past life, becoming an entirely different demon or angel with no memory of before. These mid-deaths can happen once, twice, or even a hundred times with one energy mass, but there is a point where that mass can no longer gain shape, an so it is the Time. When the Time comes, this energy leaves the universe, never to become a demon or angel again. The Time visits whenever she desires. No one can predict the time of the Time; no one can prevent the Time from arriving. We can, however, feel when the Time is coming; she looms without a reason but with a warning, for us to prepare ourselves for her happening, for she never fails to come, and after the Time comes, nobody knows what happens to us. Some say we seep into other faraway universes; others say we leave to inhabit the cosmos, waiting for our chance to return; others say we float around, then we serve as food for new beings; as others say we break the Law and disappear, leaving no trace behind; the most romantic say that if the demon or angel loved in any of its lives, then the energy leaves to merge with the soul of its loved ones, remaining with them for eternity. In reality, though, nobody knows.

     Now, all that being explained I will start my story.

     A great fire rages through the forest. Walls of red and bright yellow light roar all about, spreading like the flu and destroying everything as they go by.  Weeks past and as the great showers of April arrive and die out the fire life can be seen sprouting everywhere. Under the fallen trees, under the ashes, under it all, new seeds of hope germinate, absorbing the energy of the dead and converting it into life. A tiny pebble succumbs to the warm ashes and dies, its energy oozing to the atmosphere and floating abroad. 10 months and a half later a demon is born from this same energy. A boy of about 4 years with blond hair, green eyes and the soul of a lifeless now roams through the streets of Gryseilles.

     I walked across the populated streets of the city. I possessed more information than a human could ever handle. I was weak though, and alone. A demon knows much from the instant they come into being, but we emerge without a purpose. Many of us spend our "lives" in search for our reason to be. Many of us never find any.
I've started this story as a way to to improve my writing, so yea. This is the first part of the prologue, which is basically just a short story that might help you understand things better. As soon as the prologue is done, I promise there won't be any more shameless explanations. ^^;

Edit: Corrected a few things. The most relevant changes are at the end of paragraph 9. Sorry about that, by the way, the thing is that originally this story was about the real story's(as in not the short story intro) main character, but I later decided to change it.
